RE: Tire Pressure question

It can also have to do with tire wear. An over-inflated tire will wear in the middle. But I run my tires right at the maximum air pressure. They wear well and evenly, the handling is better, and it max's the load capacity.

RE: Safe Trailer length

Many state parks list a length limit that covers from the front of the TV to the rear bumper of the trailer. Lots of parks have a 45' or a 50' limit. This is also true in a number of National Forest Service campgrounds. Our TT is 25.5 feet ball to bumper and we are 45' including the F150. If campgrounds are crowded, sometimes the larger sites are occupied. So we chose to be conservative on length.

RE: Surveyor TT

We have a Surveyor 235RKS. We've spent 20 camping nights in the trailer this year. I would absolutely buy the Surveyor brand again if our needs changed. The quality seems quite good, we like the design, and the trailer pulls like a dream. The Surveyors seem to sit a good 12 to 18 inches lower than many other brands. I think this makes them tow better. (No leaf springs, shackles, etc.) Also would have to think they are therefore more stable and likely to get slightly better fuel mileage as they push less air.

Double check that figure though; it sure seems low. Are you sure that isn't the GVW with a load in the bed? I also have a F150 and am rated at 9,200; although I think that is a ridiculously high figure for an F150. I wouldn't tow over 6,000 with this truck for any significant distance.

Unless you use your trailer VERY frequently, I'd disconnect the battery. Then use a BatteryTender to keep your battery topped off and to prevent suffation. They work awesomely well. Your battery will always be in top condition. The life of your battery is extended considerably. I had a battery on my tractor (used about every 60 days) last for over 10 years using this device. And my tractor is ALWAYS ready to go.

I have several of these for tractors, motorcycles, etc. They prevent a lot of disappointments.

That seems like too much for your truck if that is the right capacity. We tow about 5,000 out of 9,200 and that is plenty for me. Part of the equation is how "satisfying" the tow is. I think you'd be disappointed.

RE: Fuel efficency experiment

Since SL tires are only rated for 65 mph, nobody should be towing at 70 mph. Pulling a 5,000 pound Surveyor with my F150, I observed the following mileage with my ScanGaugeII. (These readings were into a 20 mph headwind.)
55 mph = 9.5 mpg
60 mph = 9.0 mpg
65 mph = 8.0 mpg
70 mph = trouble and blowouts
On our 3,200 mile trip to the Rockies, we average 10.0 mpg with speed varying between 60 mph and 65 mph; mostly 65 mph.

RE: Slide Topper...is it worth it?

I was glad that I DIDN'T have a slide topper on our trailer. We had the awning out and it was covered with stickies from cottonwood trees and pine trees. As I tried to retract the awning, they stuck and would have been rolled up in the awning. The same would have happened with a slide topper. All I had to do with the slide was set up my step ladder and squeegy it with a mop. The awning took me MUCH longer to clean before retracting. So . . . no thanks to the slide topper from my perspective. There was no way those stickies would just fall off of the slide topper.

Hi Okie! We were in Glacier National Park. Awesome place. Saw a grizzly bear "in the wild". Great hiking. 80's during the day and about 40 (or less) at night. This was in July.

I second the Surveyor recommendation. We tow about 5,000 pounds loaded, a Surveyor 235RKS with an F150. Very nice. Get about 10 mpg @ 65 mph.

We went to Lowes and found some "Upper" cabinets read-made with oak finish that is a near-exact match to the trailer. got some great fasteners and attached it to the wall. very solid, very easy, and very useful.

We have a 2008 235RKS. Love it. Just came back from 2 weeks in the Rockies with it. compared to our previous PUP, it is a palace. We picked the Surveyor for numerous reasons: 1) enclosed underbelly 2) lower overall trailer height; only 8.5 feet at the roof top 3) torsion axles, no shackles and leaf springs 4) Overall felt that is was just a bit more upscale than a few other brands; very nice interior 5) The king size bed and great storage of this particular model
Got a 10 mpg average on the 3,200 mile trip towing @ 65 mph with an F150. Didn't think that was too bad. This trailer tows VERY well.

Many folks recommend towing no more than 80% of your tow ratings. Frankly, I would go even lower. Our F150 is rated for 9,300 pounds and we are towing just over 5,000 pounds of TT. The truck handles it OK but mountains or heavy headwinds can be a bit of a struggle; feels like it is working pretty hard. We are thinking of exploring the light duty diesels when they become available in the "1/2 ton" trucks. I think for me it is more about how "satisfying" the towing is. From a safety perspective, we are well within our limits. And there is no mechanical harm to the truck.

If you have an enclosed underbelly, think twice about attempting it. Otherwise, it is not a bad installation. Or just have your RV dealer do it if you are nervous about it.

I have been driving for over 40 years and had never experienced this phenomena until this spring. The one that hit me was totally invisible. It hit my car like a brick wall; moving it about 2 feet sideways. It was the most unbelievable thing I have experienced in driving. Bright sunny day, on a 2-lane highway, not a car in sight, wide open terrain, no buildings, trees, obstructions of any kind. Not even particularly windy! Amazing force! Scared the******out me.
